From the 18th century “Yankee Doodle” to this year’s “The Streets of Minneapolis”, the protest song has been a major medium of American opinion. In the 1960s and beyond, topics like civil rights, peace, the Vietnam War and racial justice were the focus of this music. And today? A young generation of singer-songwriters is joining the icons of the genre with their musical opinions of modern times.
