Every Year
German-American Society of Celle
We at the German-American Society of Celle also celebrate the two most popular American holidays – the Fourth of July and Thankgiving
Fourth of July
In 1999, the city of Celle hosted a public celebration of the American national holiday for the first time. Since 2002, the German-American Society of Celle has been responsible for organizing the event. Since the annual Celle celebration is generally held on a weekend, even though the (fixed-date) U.S. holiday often falls on a weekday, the event was christened “American Day.”
The goals of the event are to:
- Enjoy an American-style celebration
- Provide an event for the public in Celle
- Raise awareness of the German-American Society of Celle
- Generate proceeds from the raffle to fund our activities
In recent years, we have enjoyed the hospitality at the Museum Café Baxmann, where we celebrate to live country music and American treats. The highlight is always the “American Cake” made by Master Pastry Chef Rolf Baxmann, who has a special fondness for the USA and expresses it in his own unique way.
Thanksgiving
In 2009, a dinner to celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving was held in Celle for the first time. The annual Celle celebration, as in the USA, takes place on the fourth Thursday in November. For years, we have hosted the event at the Wietfeldt Farm in Bennebostel.
The goals of the event are to:
- Enjoy an American-style celebration
- Familiarize attendees with the tradition of Thanksgiving in the USA through text and song
- Demonstrate hospitality by extending direct invitations to Americans in Celle
- Raise awareness of the German-American Society of Celle
Over the years, more and more traditional American Thanksgiving dishes have found their way onto the Wietfeldt family’s menu, much to the delight of all the celebrants! Members of the German-American Society of Celle are contacted in advance and asked to register, and the Board sends out invitation to (American) guests at that time.
